Midian was one of the six sons of Abraham by Keturah, after the death Sarah. These sons were sent eastward of Canaan into what is now the Arabian peninsula. They were nomadic traders that are presumed to have intermarried with the Ishmaelites, hence the often interchanging of their designation, as in the story of Joseph being sold into slavery. Much of the turmoil in the middle east can be traced to the modern Arabs claiming lineage from the Midianites and therefore wanting to be counted as heirs to Abraham.
