What does "gird up your loins" mean?

“Now gird up your loins like a man,
 And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!

Job 38:3

ESV - 3 Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.

► "Gird up now thy loins like a man!" - Job 38:3 
God commanded the same command again in Job 40:7.

An ancient mode of dress, loose-flowing robes were fastened with girdles or sashes when men ran, worked, or fought. 

► The idea was that Job should prepare himself for what he was about to hear from God.
