What is meant by the phrase "fountain of life?"

Psalm 36:9a

"For with You is the fountain of life" -

Psalms 36:1 - 12

ESV - 1 Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

The word translated as "fountain" in the cited verse refers to an initial source or spring from which water flows -- in other words, the origin of that water. In that same way, God is the origin and source of all life, as both its Creator and sustainer -- and not just physically and temporally, but (in the case of humans) spiritually and eternally.

Jesus expressed the same thought when speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, when He referred to Himself as the source of living water (John 4:4-42).
