What kind of "safety" was offered to the city of Jerusalem (Jr 33:16)?

Jeremiah 33:14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.

15
“‘In those days and at that time
    I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line;
    he will do what is just and right in the land.
16
In those days Judah will be saved
    and Jerusalem will live in safety.

This is in reference to the safety that their Messiah will bring. They rejected His first coming, but will know with certainty who He is upon His second! They will then receive their long promised earthly kingdom of heaven (and true safety) at that time.

Jer 31:33
"But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people."

I think their "safety" must come only through "the branch of righteousness" (Jeremiah 33:15). This "branch" is a metaphor for the Messiah. It is similar to our safety as Gentiles. Our righteousness (which we need to get into heaven as well as to live rightly on earth) comes through Jesus Christ, 1 Corinthians 1:30. See too Isaiah 64:6 and Romans 6:23. This safety is an offered spiritual safety which we can accept or reject.

Please accept now this safety which God provided for you on the Cross:

"God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God."
