ESV - 1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

John’s ministry was a proclamation of the coming Messiah and his Kingdom. This baptism was a public profession of belief in the fulfillment of that prophecy and an evidence of repentance. I do not believe it represented more than that.There is no scriptural evidence in the Gospels that belief in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection was ever preached or a requirement for salvation. The message was Jesus is The Christ, The Son of God.
