John’s ministry was a proclamation of the coming Messiah and his Kingdom. This baptism was a public profession of belief in the fulfillment of that prophecy and an evidence of repentance. I do not believe it represented more than that. There is no scriptural evidence in the Gospels that belief in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection was ever preached or a requirement for salvation. The message was Jesus is The Christ, The Son of God.
