Many died on their wilderness journey due to their murmuring. Does this have significance for Christians today?

Isn't there a difference between murmuring against God and simply sharing and complaining about one's life struggle? I believe Scripture states those who died in the wilderness were murmuring AGAINST GOD and HIS PLAN not just about being in the wilderness. David in Psalms often complained (murmured) about his struggle and battle and asked God where was HE in it. But David still loved, followed, and obeyed God... I would believe that God knows the heart and intent of those complaining or murmuring and will Judge them accordingly. As for us, I agree with the above comment that we are to love and empathize with someone simply complaining of their trials... we have no idea of their heart or their pain. Sometimes the ONLY THING THAT KEEPS SOMEONE FROM TOTAL DESPAIR AND HOPELESSNESS is a listening ear and a kind word!
