Evil is the failure to do good! Those who left the man beside the road for the Good Samaritan to help were evil.
At each moment in life we can each LOVE, WORRY or HATE and the last two are a waste of time. You can control those responses fir yourself but you cannot choose how others react to anything.
Try it love every moment in your life and every person. You ever encounter. Some evil ones will wonder why you love them!

How can I believe in the goodness of God when there is so much evil in the world?
Answer:
Read / study the gospel of John and the question above will not be of any real concern. That considering the Lord's willingness to suffer and die for our sins, the real question should be, "How can anybody not believe in the goodness of God?"
