Why were those mentioned in Ezra 2:59 not able to prove their genealogy?

While all the others who returned from Babylon have their numbers and genealogy mentioned, those coming from these particular towns have not.

Ezra 2:59

NKJV - 59 And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer; but they could not identify their father's house or their genealogy, whether they were of Israel:

persons from all tribes returned under zerrubabel, but the dispersion of isreal still continues, only god can know who they are. at the revelation of jesus christ they will be made known.

the question you pose cannot be accurately answered with the biblical information we have available. we can only speculate why these people could not trace their genealogy. certainly for not lack of trying because people who didn't know their ancestors were banned from the priesthood and looked down upon.
