Moses was doing this during the consecration of Aaron and his sons in the tabernacle: 22 Then he presented the second ram, the ram of [j]ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 [k]Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.
Leviticus 8:22 - 23
NKJV - 22 And he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 And Moses killed it. Also he took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron's right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.

The significance of the ram's blood upon the right thumb, right ear lobe and right great toe is on of consecration. As the High Priest of the Israelites Aaron was the mediator for the people between God and man. The blood signified that everywhere he went, everything he did and all that he heard were to be for the LORD's service. For Christians we can look at this consecration at a type or representation for us, of Jesus' sacrifice and our responsibilities to Him. In everything that we hear, and do and everywhere we go we are to remember that we are bought with the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.
I like what the late Dr. Warren Wiersbe said about this consecration: "The unique part of the ceremony was the putting of blood and oil on the right ear, right thumb, and right big toe of Aaron and his sons, symbolizing that they were set apart to hear God’s voice, do God’s work, and walk in God’s ways." I.e. Ear: Symbolized listening to God's law and attending to his commands Thumb: Symbolized using their hands to serve God and obey him Toe: Symbolized walking in the way of God's precepts Or if you're a preacher and like alliteration, try this: Right Ear Lobe – Hearing God's Word The pastor must first hear God's Word before ministering -- Ezra 7:10 (NET) – "Now Ezra had dedicated himself to the study of the law of the Lord, to its observance, and to teaching its statutes and judgments in Israel." Ezra first studied and obeyed God’s Word before teaching it to others. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NET) – "Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately." A pastor must be diligent in studying and correctly handling God’s Word. Right Thumb – Doing God's Work The pastor must must do God's work before he can expect his congregation to do God's work. This is basic leadership. Acts 20:28 -- "Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son." Right Big Toe – Walking in God's Ways A pastor must walk in God's ways before he can expect his congregation to walk in God's ways. Hebrews 13:7: "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith." Matthew 5:16: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
